Restoring iPod - "An unknown error has occurred 1436"

After plugging the 3rd generation iPod Nano into my Windows machine and firing up iTunes I got the message that the iPod was formatted by a Macintosh and to use it in Windows i would need to restore it.....fair enough...selected restore, it downloaded the software and started to apply it. A few seconds later and the following error pops up:

"An unknown error has occurred 1436"

Damn!

A quick search about the interweb and there was talk of registering iTunes dlls and the likes but I stumbled across one easier fix that happened to work. Change the drive letter of the iPod.

So I changed the drive letter to Z (in XP: Administrative Tools-->Computer Management-->Disk Management-->right click the iPod-->Change Drive Letter), ran restore again and hey presto it worked :)

Simples!

My inventory....so far

Well Fiona thinks I'm mad but I now have:

3 x 8gb iPod Touch (1st gen)
2 x 2gb Nano (1st gen)
1 x 2gb Nano (2nd gen)
1 x 1 or 2gb Shuffle (2nd gen)
1 x 8gb Nano (3rd gen)
1 x 4gb Nano (3rd gen)
1 x 4gb iPod Mini (1st gen)
1 x 4gb iPod Mini (2nd gen)

also a Samsung MP3 player that I don't have a charger for....

Anyway, after a few hours of fiddling I salvaged bits from one Touch into the other and have a fully working one, also the 8gb Nano is working but needs a new battery (which I ordered).
The 2nd gen Nanos logic board was subjected to a bodged solder job (not by me!) so is goosed.
One of the 1st gen Nanos screen is cracked, hopefully can Frankenstein the two together to make one.

Onwards and upwards!

Odds n' sods & faulty iPods

Today I had the bright idea that maybe I could fix broken iPods, I mean how hard could it be?!
I set about scowering eBay for suitably broken (and cheap) Apple products and had soon added the max 200 items to my watch list and some into wishlist....I watched a few end and was amazed at how much bust pods go for!
Anyway, I took the plunge and bid on a few ditties...outbid (usually sniped at 3 seconds). So I changed tact, checked out what different models sold for and set my bids accordingly - also worth looking for BIN/Best Offers - can get a few good deals there.

Several hours (and £'s) later I was the proud owner of a couple of Touches, Nanos and other assorted MP3 goodness.

We'll see how I fair when they arrive and I see the state of them :)
